Voting YES on prop 8 doesn't make me a biggot

Posted by A. Perhaps in rantopinionLancasterAntelope Valley

A. Perhaps

Or a racist.

I've gotten into some heated arguments over prop 8 in the past couple of weeks. Most times I allow the opposing views to be said without interruption, but yesterday I was called a racist and a biggot for voting yes on prop 8. A comparison being made to the 1950's and segregation.

To the person who thinks that somehow they will get their viewpoint heard by calling others slanderous names or flying off the handle, I say take a minute to think before you open your yapp. The second you start spewing hate is the second I stopped listening to anything flying out of your mouth.

Motorcross at the AV Fairgrounds is a major water waster

Posted by MACdiva in LancasterAntelope Valley

MACdiva

So here we are having a water crisis and each day when I come home from work I drive past the motorcross facility at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds and see them hosing down the dirt out there. I know that they need to do this to keep the dust down, but doesn't this seem like a waste of water?!

Here I have gone to extremes in my own home to keep myself and my kids from using too much water and it really pisses me off to see such a blatent waste of water.

Is there some other way that they could keep the dust down?

City Council Denies Use Permit For Skating Rink

Council denies use permit for skating rink.
Monday, June 30, 2008

To: Mayor Rex Parris and all city council members of Lancaster.

I picked up my Sundays Valley Press and could not believe what I was reading. I may not have the complete details of your decision so that may be a problem with my thoughts.

However, I feel that every one in business should be able to make a living with the investment they have made. Making it in today's economy is getting harder and harder. So many businesses are failing and the only way to save so many of them is to be creative. This skating rink has served the city of Lancaster for years and many of kids have skated in that skating rink. However, times are changing and with the changing times, businesses must change to survive. To tell some one they cannot change their operation to stay a float in a changing time is total bull crap. This skating rink was built in a out of the way place and for you the city council to deny a place of business the right to have there business make a profit just isn't going to get it. It would be like you Mr. Mayor having the city council say you have to many clients so you cannot have any more. Alternatively, to tell Ron Smith that he can only print certain material at his place of business because he never printed this new stuff before so he can't do it now. Maybe Sherry's Church cannot expand any more because it is not fair to the other churches that cannot. Alternatively, how about Ken Mann's place of business, he cannot change what he is doing because the city council doesn't think it is good for the public? I believe the public will make that determination if the change is good for the public or not. If it is not good for the public, the public will not use the skating rink any more and it will close down. If the skating rink shuts down skating because they find out more money can be make renting the building out to wedding and parties, isn't that their right as a business owner. Have we become a land that will now tell each business owner what is good for their business? Have we gone that far? I believe you should all rethink what you are doing, you not only have to protect the business owner and their right to make a living but the tax base for your town. Losing businesses because of failures is not good for the cities economy. You must help the business owners stay in business not work to put them out of business.

Lancaster Palmdale section 8 BS

Posted by Cheryl in section 8Lancaster

Cheryl

I have been hearing about this valley turning intoa  section 8 dump for years. With this latest slump in the market Ive seen the growth of section 8 homes increase drastically in my neighborhood. I have a house on the corner that looks like a meth lab. The cops are there all the time and they are constantly fighting. This family of 4 or 5 or 10 for all I know is constantly fighting and their pitbull is chained up barking at all hours. These people got this house from section 8 so Ive been told.

Then there is a second house 4 houses down from mine that just turned section 8. It was a foreclosure. Dude beats his wife and his kids look like they never take a bath. They have people coming and going connstantly.

To the city of Lancaster: WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?? Why is my once quiet neighborhood turning into a slum along with hundrens of others. It doesn't even matter anymore where in the antelope valley you live becasue even people on the west side are dealing with this crap.  I have a friend over by the college with a  similar scenario on her street. Why is this allowed? Why are we turning our city into a dump for low lives????

Palmdale / Lancaster Cell Phones for soldiers program

Donate your old working or non-working cell phone the the Cell Phones for Soldiers program. Each phone donated is recycled and the money earned is used to purchse per-paid calling cards for our troops to call family and loved ones back home with. Every cell phone donated purchases up to an hour of talk time.

We all probably have an old cell phone sitting around, collecting dust - now you can put it towards something useful and clean up a bit while you're at it ;)

There are two ways Antelpe Valley residents can donate old phones. You can print out a pre-addressed label  and mail it or you can drop it off at one of these local establishments:

Are you leaving on Vacation? The sheriffs department can help keep your home safe

Many people aren't aware of a great, free service offered by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's department. You can give them a call and they will send a volunteer officer or sheriff deputy by your home while you're away. They will check for anything suspicious like broken glass, open windows, open gates and other clues that may indicate a break-in.

Call the number corresponding to the city or sheriff station closest to you and request a Vacation security check.

Robert S. Wolf Insurance & Financial Services

Posted by Business Suit in LancasterFinances

Business Suit

Just off of 10th Street West in Lancaster, you will find the office of Robert Wolf and his Associate Ernest Hamor. Combined, the two of them have more than 50 years of experience in insurance and financial planning.

“Working for the client and having their best interest in mind” is the rule Robert Wolf takes pride in running his business by. When a client comes to Robert, many times they may not be sure exactly what they want. Often when dealing with finances and insurance it's easy to feel overwhelmed by all the options available. This is something Robert is very familiar with “I sit with them and get to know them; together we design a road map of the products and services they need”. In fact, over the years Robert has gotten to know many of his clients so well that it’s not unusual that he receive invitations to everything from bar mitzvahs to retirement parties from his clients.

Robert moved to the Antelope Valley in 1989; just two years after he started his career working at New York Life in Woodland Hills. When asked why he decided to make the move, he replied “My wife and I lived in a condo in Encino; she wanted a place with dirt under it; (a place) where she could grow a veggie garden” He looked to the Antelope Valley because of friends the couple had that were already living in the area. “They told me about (the Antelope Valley) and said it was a growing area”.

Remember when cruising was in?

Posted by Larry Hobson in Lancastercruisingcars

Larry Hobson

I lived in Lancaster California then and cruising the blvd. was what every kid that had a car did. The age of 15 and ½ gave you the right to drive as long as you had a licensed driver sitting beside you. But when that age of 16 came around it meant that the blvd. was the place to be. It was the days of the 4-track stereo and 32 cents a gallon gasoline, then of course when the gasoline wars came along the gas prices didn’t go up they came down. The wars I’m talking about didn’t happen over seas in the desert they happened right here between the different gas stations. I remember then gas at 28 cents. Five dollars and you have a full tank of gas to cruise with.

Those were the days of the hot cars with big engines and dual four-barrel carburetors or three duce’s and cheater slicks for rear tires. The 409 engines were the thing to have and the chrome four speed gear shift on the floor. Those were the cars to cruise in, and car clubs were in, and they were cruising the blvd like the rest of us.

The words 10th and K meant more than just the name of two streets. It meant a race was going to take place. 10th street east had two painted stripes on it that just happened to measure a quarter mile. After the race, it was back to cruising or a stop at the Foster Freeze on avenue I and the words Duke Of Earl could be heard playing in the night air.

I met my wife cruising the Blvd. she was driving a new 65 Mustang red in color and I drove a 64 Pontiac Tempest blue green in color. She would have a car load of girls in her car and I would have a car load of boys in mind and together we would pass in the night.

The 4 track would be playing in both cars and the waving at each other would begin. Then it would be following each other to the Foster Freeze or to Paxtons drive in the in place to get that coke and meet the chicks or the chicks to meet the guys.

The cruising is how I met my wife and now we been together for 40 years, I guess you might say cruising wasn’t all that bad of a thing to do.
