Many people aren't aware of a great, free service offered by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's department. You can give them a call and they will send a volunteer officer or sheriff deputy by your home while you're away. They will check for anything suspicious like broken glass, open windows, open gates and other clues that may indicate a break-in. Call the number corresponding to the city or sheriff station closest to you and request a Vacation security check.
My father died in 1987. When the doctor told me he was dead, I did not blame the doctor. I blamed my dad for over-eating all those years, giving himself heart disease. Blaming the LASD for crime in the AV is just silly. Crime is a result of character flaws in individuals, which are the result of lack of education and lack of adequate child-rearing skills on the part of parents.
