The AV Food Critic reviews Country Kitchen

Located on the eastside of Lancaster snuggled up in the northwest corner of the 20th street east and Avenue J shopping center is "Country Kitchen".  "Country Kitchen" gives you a down home feeling from the moment you walk in. You're greeted with a fine "hello" and "sit where you like" which makes it nice, you can actually choose where you want to sit. The walls are beautifully decorated to match the paint and seating.

We were on our way to Las Vegas and State Line Nevada to review a concert, hotel and casino so we were sneaking out of Lancaster the back way, east Avenue J to Adelanto, well, you know the route. We were hungry and wanted good food, not fast food, but some good food and lots of coffee. We had never gheard of "Country Kitchen" and quite honestly we were looking for a differnt eatery we once patronized and stumbled into it.

With God on their side: Is religion distracting Lancaster from the real issues?

News in the Antelope Valley has been focused lately on issues of faith and religion. Between the questionable remarks on the Muslim faith by Lancaster Councilwoman Sherry Marquez and the “Christian city” comments made by Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris, it seems that the issues of faith, religion, and their role in Government seems to be on everyone’s mind.

After spending the last week or so covering the fallout from the Marquez debacle, I can safely say that I have come to the conclusion that this incident if nothing else is a perfect example for why church and state should be separate.

With the year 2012 looming just over the horizon, it is not surprising that moviegoers have seen a glut of Apocalyptic films come out within the last year or so. The Knowing, John Hillcoat’s The Road and the obligatory 2012 have all brought the end of the world to the silver screen.

 Coconut Craze:

Warm three tablespoons of coconut oil and gently comb into your hair from root to tip. Wrap your hair in a hot towel and let the oil sit for 30 minutes. Shampoo and rinse. Loaded with antioxidants, coconut oil works to smooth dry and damaged cuticles and lock in shine.

Coalition Forces Train for Combat at Medina Wasl

(I was recently invited by the US Army to view their training facilities at Ft Irwin in the Mojave Desert. Though I would post some of the article as there are quite a few military families in the area who would like to get a glimpse of how their loved ones are being trained and prepared to go overseas. Click the link below to view the full article as well as a slideshow of pictures from my visit)

Ft. Irwin California -- The narrow street of the village is bustling with life. Merchants call out to passersby in Pashto as they present their wears from carts under the hot desert sun. Men sit outside their homes and businesses, talking and listening to music as women wearing modest clothing and head scarves make their way toward the market.

There is a rumbling in the distance and soon the people of the village can see the dark shapes of armored vehicles approaching the edge of town.. While some decide to go inside, many continue to go about their business. Soon the rumble becomes a roar as three of the heavily armed vehicles begin to slowly roll down the street.

There is a massive explosion just to the left of the vehicle. People scream as the gunfire erupts from a rooftop above the village. Troops quickly emerge from the back of the transport with guns drawn. There is a second concussion as an improvised explosive device (or IED) detonates in a nearby car throwing a debris and dirt up into the air. When the smoke clears there is a man lying in the street with a large gash on his head. He cries out for help as the troops exchange fire with insurgents hiding in one of the buildings.

Welcome to Medina Wasl, where such chaos is commonplace. What sets this small village apart from others is that it is not located in some exotic part of the world, but in the Mojave Desert of Southern California.

Medina Wasl is one of twelve mock “villages” located at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin California, a remote military base roughly fifty miles from Barstow. The base uses these faux cities, complete with actors and special effects to create a realistic environment to train and prepare troops for deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan....
